Surfistas, tenistas, arquitectos

We have only this life to live. Selected Essays by Jean Paul-Sartre. 1939-1975.  Jean Paul-Sartre. New York: NYRB Classics, 2013
"To the man who strolled through New York before 1930, the highrise buildings towering over the city were the first signs of an architecture destined to radiate over the entire country. Skyscrapers were then living things. Today, for a Frenchman arriving from Europe, they are already mere historical monuments, witnesses to a bygone age. They still rise up into the sky but my spirit does not soar with them, and the New Yorkers pass by at their feet without so much as a glance. I cannot think of them without melancholy; they speak of an age when we believed in peace. They are already a little run-down; tomorrow, perhaps, they will be demolished. At any rate, to build them took a faith we no longer possess."

Resident Alien: The New York Diaries. Quentin Crisp. Los Angeles: Alyson Books, 1996
"When I was young, no one who visited Manhattan talked about anything but its skyscrapers. Now every city has skyscrapers."

Sidewalk Critic: Lewis Mumford's Writings on New York. Lewis Mumford. Ed. Robert Wojtowicz. New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1998
"The aesthetics of skyscrapers have long passed the point of diminishing returns; there is nothing to say about a new skyscrapers tower except that it is another skyscraper tower."

The Eiffel Tower and Other Myths. Roland Barthes. New York: Hill and Wang, 1979
"What is astonishing about the skyscraper is that it does not astonish. When we actually see one (but do we ever see one, actually) the feeling it inspires is: why not?"

Cartografía dinámica

Der amerikanische Freund. Wim Wenders
"How far from reality can the landscape design tools that we work with be? The gradual withdrawal from landscape as a place to landscape as a piece of paper or a computer screen must be questioned, not only in terms of its conceptual shortcomings but also in terms of the very landscape that result. The finest discourse in plans, whether layered or simple, cannot hide this inherent absence of site. Beautiful landscapes existed many centuries before cartography was even invented or perfected. These much older landscapes were built and thought out directly on the terrain over years. In the absence of a plan, vision became the guiding force of the project. Techniques such as onsite geometry and measurement, hydrology, construction and horticulture supplied the necessary support for the site-specific vision at hand. The central question today is whether we are even capable of returning to a site-induced vision. Working on a history of plans is not the same as working on a vision of the land. We need to reconsider the primacy of vision over plan, a vision in motion, far removed from the established canons, capable of reflecting and inflecting upon the complex urban realm."

Detalles a escala 1:1.

Detroit. Philipp Oswalt - "Shrinking Cities Volume 1: International Research" Germany, 2015

"Despite appearances otherwise, the postindustrial city and speculative settlement actually have a great deal in common. Both are characterized by overscaled infrastructures and edifices, planned and built for a population that failed to materialize. Both are characterized by vast areas of emptiness adjacent to complete, if underoccupied, facilities, creating an overall sense of incompletion and abandonment. Both are characterized by monofunctionality, typically in the form of single-use activity zones. Both are characterized by significant residual spaces between infrastructure and urban fabric that have melded into an undefined quasi-urban membrane indescribable by the traditional language of urban design and planning. And finally, both are characterized by a strange, unintentional hybridity where natural systems increasingly co-opt the unoccupied gaps and voids in urban form.

Perhaps the most fundamental difference between the two paradigms can be found in their duration. One condition took half a century to be built up and another three decades or more to fail. The other condition was conceived, designed, and deployed in less than a decade and now sits incomplete and only partially occupied, if at all. One has a cultural history, while the other is simply a transactional product."

Air structures

Graham Stevens. Atmosfield. London, 1970

"I like air structures because the major structural element you can
breathe and it smells of violets and you can't draw it." Cedric Price, 1984

Architecture without content

[We believe this work] shows our ongoing attempts to develop an alternative to the conventional educational method of extracting projects from a set of 'problems' relating to programme and locality. Instead, we have sought to privilege considerations of cultural context and formal principles. Architectural education is in an impasse we urgently need to overcome. Only if we bring back our shared knowledge about the culture of architecture and abandon the commonplaces and false truths of the modernist educational model, will we find tools capable of dealing with our current society.
In a world of rapid change the new tools might even look surprisingly like the old ones.

Excerpts from the book:

Radical Cities: Across Latin America in Search of a New Architecture
Justin McGuirk
Verso. 2014

«Rio [de Janeiro] is changing fast. In the run-up to 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, the city faces the prospect of having to build more infrastucture in half a dozen years than it did in the previous fifty. [...] And why is it that the one and a half million citizens of Rio who live in favelas are always treated to 'urban acupuncture', while a two-week global spectacle warrants mega-projects and massive infrastructural investment?»

«Designing a good building becomes a rather academic exercise when the entire system that allows that building to materialise is geared towards increasing social inequality.»

«In the informal economy, as can be witnessed across Latin America, people will find a way to put even the most unpromising or unlikely places to social and economic use. By contrast, the strict regulations governing any American city strive to segregate the domestic from the economic, and categorise the city into zones suitable for property speculation rather than rich social interaction.»

«In positioning the activists as the humbler, shreweder successors of the modernists, are we saying thet idealism yieled to pragmatism? [...] Modernism had a proud tradition of revolt, of categorical rejection of the past. The activisits are not so contrary. [...] City-making in the twenty-first century is not a tabula rasa activity; the solution is always contingent on what is already there. The first rule of the activist architect is that the informal city –the slum– is a fact, and accepting it as a functioning, productive piece of the actual city, and not something to be replaced, is the only way forward.»

«We've seen how the paternalistic attemps to impose order on the city in the middle of the last century failed. This was not just because of a lack of resources and political will, or a one-dimensional approach to urban design. They failed because the slums were too dynamic a force in the city to be subsumed and were consistently underestimated by both planners and architects, who understood the only scantly. The geographer Neil Smith put it succinctly when he said that one of the reasons why the informal city was misunderstood was because it was seen as 'pre-formal', as 'a transitional form of urbanism, en route to formalisation'.»

«What message did we hoppe to convey by exhibiting a squat [Torre David] in the world's most prestigious architecture exhibition [Venice Biennale of Architecture]? The point to make was that the real common ground of the city is not being created by architects at all. In an exhibition that tried to define a common architectural culture, that tried to unite the disparate factions behind the noble cause of architecture, our message was that the real common ground was not to be sought among other architects, but with citizens themselves.»
